Renault Trucks

By launching a new version of the Renault Magnum in early 2008, Renault Trucks will add a further chapter to this legendary vehicle's success story. As far as storage room is concerned, the Renault Magnum cab now offers up to twice as much as is usually available on a conventional long haul vehicle. For example, the front overhead unit, within easy reach of the driver when at the wheel, is three times the previous size! Furthermore, inspired by the aeronautics industry, Renault Trucks has also added a rear overhead unit with 95 L storage capacity. With all these storage solutions available, drivers are now able to leave on long-haul trips with everything they need and peace of mind.

Vehicles on offer range from the Midlum, which is a vehicle suited to the distribution sector, available in both 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 variants, to the Premium range, which is suited to on-highway, both short and long haul operations, available in 4 x 2 and 6 x 2 variants, and lastly the Kerax range, which is arguably the toughest vehicle available on the local market, suited to mining, forestry, construction and other industries, where severe demands are made on the vehicle, both on and off-road. The Kerax is available in 4 x 2, 4 x 4 and 6 x 4 options, including tippers, rigids and truck tractors.

Renault have several exiting new products on the horizon. With the new products Renault will further establish itself as a mainstream player in the commercial vehicle market, through the introduction of models at both extremes of the market.
Renault has the range of trucks to suit all applications from medium commercials to extra heavies and all that lies in between. In addition they have the vehicles designed specifically for sub-sectors within the medium, heavy and extra heavy areas. Whether it is on-highway line-haul, heavy duty construction applications, or distribution Renault have the vehicle that is designed for exactly that purpose.

Benefiting from being part of Commercial Vehicle Holdings, a Division of Imperial Group, Renault offers after sales service and parts supply, from any of the service centres across the country. The network has been expanded to include Bloemfontein, Harrismith, Middelburg and Paarl, meaning therefore that the support network for Renault now includes 14 branches throughout South Africa.

Renault trucks are assembled at the modern facility in Apex, which recently benefited from a multi-million rand expansion in order to meet the demands being made by Renault, further proof of the future support of the brand by Imperial. The Kerax range was the first of the models to be assembled at this facility, while the other models will be assembled there from early in 2007.
Anyway, the Hybrys is a parallel diesel hybrid concept truck designed for refuse collection. It would be powered by a DXi7, 320 hp engine, an Optidriver+ robotized gearbox and an MDS (Motor Drive System) electric motor. While the press release doesn't mention idling, it seems like there's a lot of potential to seriously reduce emissions while the truck is standing still thanks to a feature of a key-less start that can power up "the wholly-electric power system before the diesel engine takes over." The system does offer "very much lower fuel consumption."

Renault's press release also talks about the marque's natural gas trucks and the potential to use B30 in a truck like this. Renault will display the Hybrys at the 29e Salon du transport routier d'Amsterdam later this month. There's another image of the trash truck of the future after the jump.


Renault Trucks has designed a new "innovative, urban, hybrid technology concept vehicle." I think this truck simply must have been named with an eye towards the Google age, to be the first result in an internet search. How else to explain the name "Hybrys"?
