New Project: Time Attack Car

With the R33 GT-R rebuild nearing completion, its time to to start a new project. It has always been my intention to purchase, rebuild and track a car. Basically, I'm looking for a road legal track car to carry out time attack runs in Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Now the next question is, what car to get?

Unlike in Australia, the UK or the States, we Malaysians are shafted when it comes to used cars. In Australia for example, you could purchase a decent road legal Nissan S13 or S14 for as little as RM10,000 - RM15,000 ringgit. Due to the high Malaysian import tax on cars (300% import duties on all foreign cars), used car prices are similarly affected. What this means is that a used S13 or S14 will probably cost three times as much in Malaysia a compared to a similar car in Australia. This makes it a challenge for the average person to pursue his or her motoring dream, to build a drift machine or to own a dedicated track car.

We now move on to the question of what make and model would be suitable for a time attack car. I've narrowed it down to a few budget (and not so budget) vehicles, seeing as this should be cost saving exercise. After all, a time attack car would require a further outlay of money in order to make it track ready.

And here are the contenders with their pros and cons:

  Nissan S13 Silvia Coupe

Pros
  • Good RWD base to build up from
  • Easy to get power out of the Nissan SR20 engine
  • Option to retro-fit parts from other Nissan models
  • Massive amount of aftermarket parts
  • Huge supply of halfcuts and spare parts that are already in Malaysia
Cons
  • Can be expensive to purchase
  • Difficult to find one in good condition and tastefully modified
  •
    Honda Integra DC2

    Pros
    • Light weight
    • Rigid chassis
    • Loads of aftermarket parts available
    • Plenty of halfcuts and spare parts that already in Malaysia
    Cons
    • Its a FWD, meaning the front wheels have to not only steer the car but also slow it down
    • A bit expensive to produce big power being an N/A car
    • Parts can be expensive

Mazda MX-5 (First Gen / NA)

        Pros
        • Extremely capable chassis
        • Engine responds well to mods, especially when turbocharged
        Cons
        • Manual units are rare in Malaysia
        • Turbo kit has to be sourced from abroad (costly)
        • Not as many halfcuts and spare parts compared to the other cars on this list
        • Cars in good condition still command high prices
        • Standard 1.6 N/A engine is gutless and seriously lacking in torque

        Subaru WRX GC8

        Pros
        • Great AWD race car platform
        • Capable car even in stock form
        • Option to retro-fit parts from STI models
        Cons
        • Expensive to purchase
        • Finding one in good condition is difficult
        • Parts aren't cheap
        • Stock GC8 WRX gearbox is crap
        • Full STI conversion costs a lot of money
        • Can be expensive to get big power out of the Subaru EJ engine

         Mitsubishi Evo II to VIII

        Pros
        • Amazing AWD race car platform
        • Very capable even in stock form
        • Some models are 'race ready' (i.e. Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition)
        Cons
        • Very expensive to purchase
        • Difficult to find genuine Evos in good condition
        • Will be expensive to produce big power after a certain point

So which car to get? Find out in the next blog posting!

        Mitsubishi i MiEV

The Mitsubishi i MiEV (MiEV is an acronym for Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) is a five-door hatchback electric car produced by Mitsubishi Motors. According to the manufacturer, the i MiEV all-electric range is 100 miles (160 km) on the Japanese test cycle and 75 miles (121 km) on the US cycle.
        History
Mitsubishi i MiEV, based on the Mitsubishi i kei car, was first exhibited at the 22nd International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exposition in Yokohama. Mitsubishi eschews the in-wheel motors (MIEV) in favour of a more conventional array of batteries, motor and inverter to replace the "rear midship" engine and fuel tank of the conventional car. Mitsubishi Motors provided three power companies with vehicles in 2006 and 2007 in order to conduct joint research to evaluate how fast-charge infrastructure may be developed for EVs. Fleet testing by five power companies was conducted in 2007. The car had a range of 130 kilometres (80 mi) for the 16 kW·h lithium-ion pack and 160 kilometres (100 mi) for the 20 kW·h pack. Top speed was 130 kilometres per hour (80 mph).Plans were announced in 2008 to sell the i MiEV in European markets as the Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-ZERO.
        Powertrain
The production version of the 2009 i MiEV has a single permanent magnet synchronous motor mounted on the rear axle with a power output of 47 kW and torque output 180 N·m. The vehicle uses a single-speed reduction gear transmission and has a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The car's top speed is 130 kilometres per hour (80 mph).
        Battery
The 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that consists of 88 cells is placed under the base floor. The pack has 22 cell modules connected in series at the nominal voltage of 330 V. There are two 4-cell modules placed vertically at the center of the pack and 10 8-cell modules placed horizontally. It is developed by Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa for both high specific energy and high rate discharge and manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture of GS Yuasa Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. The entire pack has a specific energy of 80 Wh/kg.
        Emergency power supply
In the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Mitsubishi announced that the company decided to introduce one year ahead of schedule a device that enables the i-MiEV to supply power to home electric appliances in the event of a power outage or natural disasters. The device provides 100-volt outlets, converting the i MiEV's direct current (DC) battery power into 100 volts alternating current (AC) to power up to 1,500 watts, which is enough to power most home electronics such as a basic rice cooker, a small heater, or any number of cellphones, laptops and radios. Mitsubishi estimates that the i MiEV total battery capacity is enough to provide nearly 1.5 days of power to an average Japanese home. The device will be available by the end of 2011.
Production of the left-hand drive European-spec i-MiEV began in October 2010 and production of the North American-spec i-MiEV is scheduled for fiscal year 2011.[24][25] By the end of November 2010 cumulative production had reached 5,000 units at Mitsubitshi's Mizushima Plant.[24] In May 2011 Mitsubishi announced a new production target of 25,000 i-MiEVs worldwide in fiscal year 2011. The carmaker also plans to export about 15,000 units overseas, mainly to Europe, where the company will promote sales to the European public sector, such as police departments and local governments.
        Awards and recognition
"2009 Japan Automotive Hall of Fame Car Technology of the Year" award in October 2009.
"Japanese Car of the Year Most Advanced Technology" awarded during the 41st Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009.
"Ecobest 2009" by AUTOBEST in January 2010.
"Environment Special Grand Prize" awarded during the 25th International Automobile Festival, Paris, France on February 2010.
The i MiEV was one of the five finalists to the 2011 Green Car Vision Award.

        Mitsubishi evo

        Mitsubishi evo
Mitsubishi car manufacturer and its three diamonds in the badge are known for everyone. This manufacturer produces everything, from small compact city vehicles, through off-roads to special ones as Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Right this car was chosen by the company Seidl Tuning for next improvements. It’s the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in its 8th generation. I think there’s no need to introduce this car. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is like an ordinary Mitsubishi Lancer but with WRC style. And that means really aggressive engine, suspension, interior with no comfort but great seating. It’s the car for those who want fast, but safe drive. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 has a 2.0 liter DOHC 16V turbocharged engine. The base offers 280hp. Of course there are FQ special versions with the most powerful FQ400 producing amazing 405hp. This version is similar or better than Lamborghini Murcielago, Audi RS4 or Porsche Carrera 4S. Seidl Tuning and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 is a very nice partnership. Seidl used to tune especially German cars, but know they’ve decided to beat this sharp Japanese. Because the engine and suspension are up-to-date, they made only bodykit modifications – front bumper, side sills and rear bumper. The front bumper comes from original lines and it’s slightly modified. There are vertical bars in side openings and both sides has small lollypops now. The most distinctive change is in case of new paintwork of central part. Now it’s black and it looks very interesting. They continued in the sills and now we can enjoy extreme ones with sporting image. The rear bumper was next and it consists of three big openings with exhaust tip in one of them. Overall, this bumper looks nice; it’s simple but has nice details. The way of German tuners. They didn’t forget about wheels. Original rims were replaced by chromed alloys with low-profile tires. I think this wasn’t good move. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo’s characteristic rear wing was replaced by slightly retiring with stop light. And that’s all. The German Seidl tuning proves that they can do also non-German machines. They made the extreme bodykit for the extreme car. It’s not perfect, but looks good and drives perfectly.
